In Brief: AIG Appoints Leader For Philippine Unit

NEW YORK - Roberto R. Romulo has been named chairman of Philam Insurance Co., the Philippine non-life insurance company owned by American International Group.

Mr. Romulo joins Philam from International Business Machines Corp., where he was general manager of IBM Thailand Co. Ltd. and president of IBM Philippines Inc. He also was the Philippines' secretary of foreign affairs and its ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the European Community.

He was recently appointed by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to head a task force developing plans for member nations to participate in the global networked economy.

As chairman of Philam, Mr. Romulo is to focus on expanding AIG's Regional IT Deployment Center in Manila, which gives information technology support to AIG operating units in Southeast Asia, so that it can cover the entire Asia-Pacific region.

"With his extensive information technology background and senior-level government service record, he will bring important new capabilities to our operations in the Philippines, one of AIG's oldest markets," said AIG chairman M.R. Greenberg.

AIG also owns the Philippine American Life and General Insurance Co., the largest life insurance company in the Philippines.
