In Brief: AIG Closes $23B American General Deal

NEW YORK - American International Group Inc. said Wednesday that it has closed its $23 billion purchase of American General Corp. of Houston.

American General, the top annuity provider through banks in the first half of this year, will operate as a subsidiary of American International. Last year American International and American General had a combined total of $15 billion of annuity deposits, 40% more than their nearest competitor.
