In Brief: BancorpSouth Changes Name for Ala. Push

In conjunction with a move into Alabama, Tupelo, Miss.-based BancorpSouth is rolling out a new brand name to replace its 33- year-old Bank of Mississippi moniker.

The company said it would use the name BancorpSouth Bank starting this Friday. The name change coincides with the completion of BancorpSouth's deal to buy Alabama Bancorp., Birmingham.

BancorpSouth's 150 branches in Mississippi and Tennessee will get new signs Jan. 1. At that point, the company plans to drop both the Bank of Mississippi name and the Volunteer Bank name it uses in Tennessee.

"It was causing all kinds of confusion, using different names all over,"said company spokesman Harry Baxter. - Carey Gillam
