In Brief: BB&T Building Operations Ctr. in Va.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —BB&T Corp. announced plans to build a 50,000 square-foot operations center in Winchester, Va., to process transactions for the bank’s Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., markets.

The Winston-Salem, N.C., company said the Winchester center, scheduled to open in January 2002, could eventually employ 200 people. Other BB&T operations centers are in Macon, Ga.; Wilson and Charlotte, N.C.; and Charleston, W.Va. A spokeswoman said it was too early to say how much the Winchester center would cost.

The announcement follows a pair of BB&T acquisitions in Virginia. In January, BB&T announced an agreement to purchase F&M National Corp. in Winchester for $1.17 billion, and a $180.5 million deal for Virginia Capital Bancshares in Fredericksburg, Va. Both deals are expected to close this summer.
