Checkmate Electronics Inc. said it will begin marketing low-cost external smart card devices, as well as built-in smart card readers, by midyear.

Checkmate estimates that more than four million existing point of sale terminals will be upgraded to smart card capability - at approximately $200 per lane - over the next five years. Checkmate said it intends to be a major player in this market.
