An organization affiliated with a Baptist church is the first credit union to be created in 1995.

The National Credit Union Administration granted a charter to the First Baptist Church of Vienna (Va.) Federal Credit Union on Jan. 18.

"The First Baptist Church of Vienna Federal Credit Union was established to provide the opportunity to worship together, save together, and lend together," credit union organizers said in a release.

In a survey of the 1,000 potential members, 57% pledged to deposit about $135,000 in the new institution. The Vienna church is donating $2,000 toward start-up costs, a computer, and office space.
