In Brief: Compaq Is Hired for SunTrust Job

HOUSTON — Compaq Computer Corp. has announced its second major bank contract in recent weeks, a $7 million technology upgrade for SunTrust Banks Inc. of Atlanta.

Compaq will provide 3,000 desktop computers and 400 servers for 425 SunTrust branches and training offices in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington. SunTrust said it wants to standardize on a single operating platform.

The pact was announced Wednesday, eight days after Compaq announced a three-year contract to provide 120,000 desktop computers, 6,000 retail branch servers, 4,000 trading workstations, and services and support to Bank of America. The price tag in that deal was not disclosed.
