In Brief: Conseco Hires Chief Financial Officer

INDIANAPOLIS — Conseco Inc. announced on Wednesday that it has appointed Charles B. Chokel its chief financial officer.

Mr. Chokel joins Conseco after 23 years at Progressive Corp. of Mayfield Village, Ohio, one of the nation’s largest auto insurance companies.

Mr. Chokel was co-chief executive officer at Progressive, responsible for investments and capital management. From 1991 to 1998 he was CFO.

Conseco’s top ranks began changing hands last summer when Stephen C. Hilbert, Conseco’s founder, chairman, and chief executive, and Rollin M. Dick, its chief financial officer, resigned after being unable to recover from the damaging 1998 purchase of Green Tree Financial Corp., now Conseco Finance.

Gary Wendt took over as chief executive of Conseco in June.
