In Brief: DLJ to Use Speech Recognition System

JERSEY CITY - DLJdirect said Tuesday that it has selected speech recognition software from SpeechWorks International Inc. to enhance its telephone brokerage system, TradeTalk.

The software will let DLJdirect customers speak their requests and trades directly into the phone, rather than push buttons. DLJdirect, the online brokerage service of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, Inc., said it expects the volume of calls to TradeTalk to increase substantially when the automated service becomes available in the third quarter. Currently, more than 85,000 of DLJdirect's 900,000 customers access TradeTalk daily.

SpeechWorks, based in Boston, is a privately held company with financing from Bank of America Ventures, Citigroup's e-Citi unit, GE Equity, Intel Corp., MCI WorldCom Venture Fund, Reuters, and SAP. Its customers include Amtrak, Continental Airlines, Federal Express, and United Airlines.
