In Brief: First Data Claims a Smart-Card First

OMAHA — First Data Corp. says it has become the first card processor in the United States that can work with multi-application smart cards that use Open Platform technology.

First Data is the processor for Fleet Credit Card Services, the FleetBoston Financial Corp. subsidiary that on Friday introduced the Fusion card, the first Visa chip card to be put in broad distribution in the United States.

First Data says it can “personalize, process, and deliver” multi-application chip cards. The three applications on the Visa Smart card — credit/debit, loyalty/rewards, and secure Web access — reside on a Java 2.1, Open Platform Version 2.0 chip.
