In Brief: First Data Starts Up Net Commerce Group

First Data Corp. has formed a discrete Internet commerce division to concentrate on payment products and services for on-line merchants, the Atlanta-based company said Wednesday at the Fall Internet World '99 Conference in New York.

Executive vice president John Duncan, who had been leading Internet initiatives for First Data Merchant Services, was named head of the Internet commerce group, which will work with all First Data subsidiaries.

In the same announcement, First Data unveiled SurePay, a stand-alone gateway payment service that enables on-line merchants to accept and process credit cards and checks. Cash acceptance will follow.

The checks will be processed through First Data's Telecheck subsidiary, and cash payments will flow through Western Union, its money transfer subsidiary. -- Helen Stock
