In Brief: First USA Discontinues Wallet; No Explanation

WILMINGTON, Del. - Like American Express Co. and Wells Fargo & Co. before it, the credit card issuer First USA has quietly discontinued its digital wallet.

The Bank One Corp. subsidiary, which had offered the product through Gator.com, issued a notice saying that after Aug. 31 it will still be available, but that it will no longer be updated or supported by First USA.

The notice went on to warn that the wallet will cease to work as merchants change their online purchase forms. Digital wallets act as form-fillers when consumers use merchant Web sites to make purchases. First USA's also offered comparison pricing and password storage.

American Express and Wells Fargo cited the product's failure to win over shoppers. A First USA spokesman declined to give the reasons for his company's cancellation.

Gator.com, of Redwood City, Calif., has put its customer base at 18 million.
