In Brief: Fleet Exec May Run for Senator in Brazil

Dow Jones

NEW YORK - Henrique de Campos Meirelles, the president of FleetBoston Financial Corp.'s corporate and global bank, is expected to join Brazil's Liberal Front Party, or PFL, and run for senator of the central state of Goias next year, the newspaper Valor reported Tuesday.

"Mr. Meirelles has been invited over the years by several political parties to run for the Senate in Brazil," said James Mahoney, a FleetBoston Financial spokesman. "Notwithstanding his deep interest in his home country, Mr. Meirelles remains focused on his executive responsibilities at FleetBoston."

Mr. Meirelles, who was not available for comment, headed BankBoston Corp.'s Latin America business until Fleet Financial Group bought it two years ago. He is currently based in New York.
