Bloomberg News

HONG KONG - Goldman Sachs Group Inc. has recalled Tim Dattels, head of its investment banking group in Asia outside Japan, to the United States to lead its Menlo Park, Calif., office.

Mr. Dattels, 42, will assume a newly created post overseeing several divisions in Goldman's Silicon Valley operation, which includes the firm's technology business, according to an internal e-mail signed by chairman Henry Paulson and co-presidents John Thain and John Thornton.

Mr. Dattels is to join Goldman's technology operating committee and will help expand its global technology efforts. "He will also focus on a small number of very important individual and corporate clients in the technology sector," the e-mail said.

Michael Carr, who is co-head of Goldman's merger unit in the Americas, is to succeed Mr. Dattels in Hong Kong, the company told employees in a separate e-mail.

A spokeswoman for Goldman confirmed the appointments Monday.
