In Brief: HFNC Ends Merger Talks-For Now

HFNC Financial Corp. confirmed last week it had been in talks to be acquired but said those discussions have ended. It said, however, that it may consider a merger or sale in the future. Wachovia Corp., BB&T Corp., and First Citizens Bancshares were reported in recent weeks to be wooing HFNC, parent of Home Federal Savings and Loan Association.

The rumors had triggered heavy trading in HFNC; more than 500,000 shares changed hands Oct. 10 and 13. Volume has since slowed to the company's daily average of 40,000 shares.
