In Brief: Hibernia Issues 83,500 Enhanced Debit Cards

Hibernia National Bank said some 83,500 customers were issued CheckMate debit cards. The cards, branded as MasterCards, can be used as automated teller machine cards and to make purchases where MasterCards are accepted.

The $7.4 billion-asset bank is positioning the card as an enhanced ATM card that also works like a check.

Hibernia said it inherited the CheckMate name when it merged with Progressive Bank and Trust in Houma, La., last summer.

The New Orleans bank is conducting a $15,000 CheckMate sweepstakes through April 15. During this period, every time customers use their CheckMate card to make a purchase, they will be entered in the sweepstakes. The grand-prize winner receives $10,000, and two runner-ups will receive $2,500 each. Prize winners will be notified by mail May 17.
