In Brief: Huntington Claims 100,000 Web Accounts

Huntington Bancshares said it has surpassed 100,000 account openings through its Internet-based Huntington Web Bank, joining a handful of other banking companies in six figures.

"Almost 5% of our households are doing their banking on-line," said Chet Thompson, senior vice president and director of electronic commerce, Huntington National Bank.

"This type of penetration makes the Huntington second to none among financial institutions that offer banking on the Web, and we plan to keep the momentum going."

The $27 billion-asset bank introduced its Web service in June 1996. It is based on software from Security First Technologies, of which Huntington is a part owner.
