In Brief: Journalism Award to American Banker

NEW YORK — American Banker has won the Jesse H. Neal Award for Editorial Excellence in Business Journalism.

The newspaper was honored for its extensive reporting last year on the subject of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.’s efforts to reform deposit insurance.

The coverage included numerous articles focused on public and behind-the-scenes activities of the FDIC and key legislators and regulators with influence in financial services. It also explored efforts by firms such as Merrill Lynch & Co. and Salomon Smith Barney to boost marketing of FDIC-insured sweep accounts. The FDIC has argued that such efforts put strain on the deposit insurance system.

American Banker took first prize in the category of best news coverage by a publication with revenues of more $7 million.

American Business Media, a trade group for business media publications, has sponsored the Neal Awards since 1955.
