In Brief: MetLife Unit Signs Former Football Pro

State Street Research and Management Co. in Boston, a unit of Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., has hired a former professional football player to sell investment management services to rich athletes.

Kenneth "Pete" Shaw, 46, a former defensive back for the San Diego Chargers and New York Giants, was named a regional sales vice president of State Street Research's private client group. He will be based in California.

Mr. Shaw was executive vice president and director of football operations for Pro-West Sports Management Group for six years. Before that he managed investment portfolios as a Prudential Securities vice president in San Diego.
