NEW YORK - John Mack, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co.'s former president, filed to sell one million shares of the securities firm six days after he officially retired in a power struggle he lost to chairman Philip Purcell.

The stock is worth about $55 million. Mr. Mack, who owned 7.54 million shares as of Jan. 12, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings, will remain the company's largest shareholder.

Mr. Mack, 56, announced his resignation in January because he did not expect he would be allowed to run the company he helped create in 1997 when Morgan Stanley & Co. bought Dean Witter, Discover & Co.
