In Brief: National Data Unit to Process SafeDebit

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. - NDC eCommerce, a division of Atlanta-based National Data Corp., has agreed to process SafeDebit, the online payment option developed by NYCE Corp.

NDC eCommerce, which processes point of sale transactions, will market SafeDebit to independent sales organizations and merchant acquiring banks.

The company will also offer the payment method directly to Internet merchants. The agreement is aimed at building merchant acceptance of SafeDebit, which NYCE introduced in December as a more secure alternative to credit cards, the dominant form of Internet payment.

The card-like SafeDebit CD-ROM slips into personal computers and is activated by a personal identification number. CVS Corp. and Walgreen Co. are the first online merchants to agree to accept SafeDebit, which has yet to go live. Dallas-based Paymentech, a prominent merchant acquirer, has also committed to processing the transactions. Michigan National Bank and North Fork Bank have signed on as issuers.
