In Brief: NCUA Wants to See Financials - Again

WASHINGTON - The National Credit Union Administration is requiring credit unions to submit financial statements with their call reports for the same reason the agency stopped the practice two years ago: grumbling examiners.

The financials are a useful tool in tracking down any transposition errors in call reports, and examiners asked the agency to require that they be submitted, said David M. Marquis, NCUA director of the Office of Examination and Insurance. They weren't seen that way two years ago.

"A regional director or two thought it was a burden for the examiner to have to pick up another piece of paper," Mr. Marquis said. "After we dropped it, examiners were saying, 'Hey, I found a lot of errors all the time using the financials, now I have to call the credit unions.'

"We've made a 180-degree turn," he said.
