In Brief: Net Broker Business Dipped in August

Internet brokerages are having a tough quarter, according to Credit Suisse First Boston.

"We believe the on-line brokers experienced a decline in trading volume in August versus July," analysts at the investment bank wrote in a market update Monday. The August softening followed a weak July, setting the stage for what the analysts said will likely be the first quarter-to-quarter decline in trading activity for the closely watched industry.

Credit Suisse analysts attributed the dropoff to price declines during July and August in Internet stocks, which have been popular with on-line investors. -- Ross Snel
