IN BRIEF: S&P Says Year-2000 Laggards Risk Credit Slap

Standard & Poor's is warning companies that not having their computer systems ready for 2000 could mean credit problems.

The New York-based credit-rating company reports in this week's issue of CreditWeek that a company's failure to correct the problem could lead to a "negative rating consideration."

But S&P also warned that vendors, clients, and customers of a company not in compliance might affect a company's ratings even if that company has eliminated the problem.

Insurance and financial services companies are at the greatest risk, the report said. But failure to address the problem would not in itself cause a rating downgrade.
