In Brief: Schlumberger Opens 2 Facilities in U.S.

Schlumberger Smart Cards and Systems opened two new U.S. facilities last week to support the growing demand for smart cards and their applications.

A San Jose, Calif., site will focus on application development and support. Engineering experts will design secure electronic payment transaction systems, smart card systems for cellular telephone activation, and health care applications.

The other location, in Austin, Tex., will focus on research and development. Engineers at this site will work on improving software structures to support new smart card applications. That center will be part of the existing Schlumberger Austin information technology development laboratory.

Schlumberger is also launching PC-based software, called Logicc, which will help terminal manufacturers and operators bring new applications to the marketplace. The card manufacturer said the software will assist in reducing the costs and time associated with development and certification.

The system includes high level support for financial smart card applications compatible with the standards set by Europay, MasterCard, and Visa. - Compiled by Valerie Block
