In Brief: School Computer Promo at Charter 1

CLEVELAND - Charter One Financial Inc. has started a fund to donate computers to schools in its six-state market.

For the next eight weeks, each time a new customer signs up to bank online the $34 billion-asset thrift company will contribute to the One-Click fund.

The fund will help buy Apple iMac computers and printers for schools in Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York.

"By signing up to bank online, Charter One and its customers can make a significant and positive contribution to our schools," said Mark Grosi, executive vice president of retail banking, in a press statement Monday to announcing the plan.

The online banking service, which was begun in December, has attracted 85,000 customers.
