SCM Microsystems Inc., a smart card system developer active in the access control market, has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Shuttle Technology Group Ltd. of Britain for $33 million.

Shuttle, which also has operations in India and in Fremont, Calif., specializes in access and interface technology for equipment manufacturers such as Hewlett-Packard, Imation, Panasonic, NEC, Olympus, and Syquest.

The company recently introduced the Digit fingerprint recognition device, which can complement SCM's focus on smart cards and other security devices.

"This transaction brings together two leaders in access and interface technology in highly complementary arenas, including smart cards, digital media, and digital content platforms," said Steve Humphreys, president and chief executive officer of SCM Microsystems.
