WASHINGTON - BITS, the technology arm of the Financial Services Roundtable, said Thursday that it had added six new directors in response to increasing interest in e-commerce and technology among financial institutions.

The new directors are: Jerry A. Grundhofer, president and chief executive officer of Firstar Corp.; Denis J. O'Leary, executive vice president of Chase Manhattan Corp. and CEO of Chase.com; Thomas A. Renyi, chairman and CEO of Bank of New York Co.; Edward B. Rust Jr., chairman and CEO of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co.; Rudy E. Schupp, chairman and CEO of Republic Security Bank; and G. Kennedy Thompson, president and CEO of First Union Corp.

James H. Blanchard, BITS' board chairman as well as chairman and CEO of Synovus Financial Corp., said BITS plans to add more board members soon. "The financial services industry is increasingly alert and savvy about the role of technology and the Internet in the global marketplace, and BITS has led the way to that understanding," he said.
