Some big banks are cutting back on their usage of live telephone operators in dealing with their small business customers, according to Payment Systems Inc.

In a recent survey of the 300 largest banks, the research firm found that 16% of institutions that in 1995 offered so-called telephone information reporting through operators stopped providing it in 1996. Instead, they provide information via computer.
