In Brief: Trade Group Certifies Maine Bank Regulator

The national trade group for state bank regulators last week awarded accreditation to the Maine Bureau of Banking.

Maine's banking department, which supervises 31 state-chartered commercial and savings banks, is the 40th state regulatory agency to be accredited by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors.

Officials with the trade group said the goal of accreditation is to strengthen state banking departments and "demonstrate the high quality of state banking departments to the general public."

The accreditation process includes on-site inspections of the state's chartering, regulatory, and supervisory methods. A special oversight committee then votes on whether to grant accreditation.
