In Brief: Unexpected Increase for State Jobless Rolls

The number of workers filing for state unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week after a revised estimate put the previous week's total above the 300,000 mark for the first time in 10 weeks, government figures showed.

First-time jobless claims increased 10,000, to a seasonally adjusted 312,000 for the week that ended Oct. 2, the Labor Department said. Claims in the week that ended Sept. 25 rose by a revised 28,000, to 302,000, originally reported at 299,000.
