In Brief: United Companies Set To Increase Dividends

United Companies Financial Corp. said it increase stock dividends this quarter.

The company will pay 8 cents per common share, up from 7 cents. The payout will be Jan. 2.

A 74.25-cent dividend will be paid on all convertible preferred stock, a spokesman said.

The company has turned in disappointing earnings two quarters in a row, he said, and is using the dividend increase to reward patient shareholders.
