In Brief: VeriSign Registers<@SM> TV Domain Names

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — VeriSign Inc.’s Network Solutions Inc. subsidiary on Wednesday began registering dot-tv domain names as part of an exclusive worldwide agreement with dotTV, a Los Angeles provider of Web identity services and the source for Web addresses ending in dot-tv.

VeriSign, through its NSI Capital Management Inc. subsidiary, led a round of financing for dotTV that closed on Dec. 29, raising about $32 million.

Network Solutions and dotTV are pitching the new suffix to the broadcasting industry and trying to establish it as a Web symbol on par with the largest domain names. Organizations that have already adopted the dot-tv domain include Columbia TriStar International Television, Carsey-Werner Co., and Major League Baseball, as well more than 150 broadcasters including PAX TV, British Telecom, and affiliates of all the major U.S. networks.

“Our agreement with Network Solutions confirms dotTV’s position as a recognized leader in the domain-name space,” said Lou Kerner, chief executive officer of dotTV. “Placing dot-tv alongside dot-com and dot-net on the NSI Web site is a clear indication of the growing global demand and appeal of dot-tv Web addresses.”
