In Brief: X.Com Pay Service By Wireless Phone

PALO ALTO, Calif. - X.com, operator of the world's largest person-to-person payments network, is offering its service by mobile phone.

Web-enabled phones can now be used to send money to anyone in the United States by e-mail through X.com's PayPal. The phones can also be used to review PayPal account balances and transactions.

Two million people use X.com to send and receive money from personal computers and from Palm Inc.'s personal digital assistants. PayPal is accepted by more than one third of all auctions on eBay.

X.com plans to add instant payment notifications to its mobile phone service. Other plans include providing access through other wireless devices, such as two-way pagers.
