Letter to the Editor: Nellie Mae's Study Does Not Condemn Credit Card Issuers

An article on page 8 of your March 2 issue with the headline "Student Loan GSE Slams Card Company Marketing" suggests that our study condemned the credit card industry.

Neither comments made by a Nellie Mae spokeswoman, nor the statistics provided from the study, support this assertion.

The study, as referenced in the text of the article, does not place blame on credit card providers, but rather highlights the proliferation of student credit card debt and usage for the purpose of informing students, parents, and educators about the negative consequences of financial irresponsibility.

As a top originator of student loans, Nellie Mae believes it has a responsibility to its borrowers and other college students to educate them on the negative consequences of all types of debt.
