Losses at RTC's thrifts up 34% in quarter.

WASHINGTON - The combined net operating loss of the 84 thrifts under government control increased 34% in the first quarter, to $190 million, the Resolution Trust Corp. said.

The total net loss, which adds noncash charges to recognize losses on assets, was $597 million in the first three months of the year, down from a $1.5 billion loss in the fourth quarter of 1992. The RTC noted that fourth-quarter losses were inflated because a large thrift took significant chargeoffs.

The RTC-operated thrifts held $35.7 billion in assets and $28 billion in deposits on March 31.
