Maestro accepted by 4 chains.

Four major chains, representing more than 425 supermarkets, have begun accepting MasterCard International's Maestro debit product.

Maestro U.S.A. announced Sept. 22 that Albertson's Inc., Giant Eagle Inc., Hannaford Bros. Co., and Purity Supreme are accepting Maestro-enhanced ATM cash cards.

The supermarket chains said adding Maestro improves service to out-of-town shoppers, as a more efficient alternative to out-of-state checks.

The more payment options we offer, the easier and more convenient it is for our customers to shop in our stores," said Albert Carville, vice president of information systems and technology at Hannaford Bros, Co.

Arthur D. Kranzle, president and chief executive officer for Maestro U.S.A., said merchants are finding the global utility of the Maestro product complements local and regional network point of sale debit acceptance.
