MasterCard to Sponsor Trade Center Attraction

MasterCard International said it will sponsor Top of the World, a tourist attraction planned for the 107th floor of New York's World Trade Center.

The complex is slated for completion by spring 1997. It is to include three wide-screen adventure theaters, 24 multilingual kiosks providing New York City tourist information, and a nightly light show - as well as retail shops and restaurants.

Visitors would be informed, via signs at the point of sale and throughout the facility, that MasterCard is the preferred card. Other cards would be accepted for payment, however.

"Top of the World will be one of the big travel destinations in New York City," Ellen Alexander, MasterCard's vice president of U.S. merchant acceptance, said of the project being developed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

"This is a visible representation of our commitment that you can use MasterCard anywhere in the world, even on the 107th floor," she added.

Plans call for MasterCard's Maestro to be designated the exclusive on- line debit card and a MasterCard/Cirrus ATM to be installed on the observation deck.

MasterCard has also become the preferred card of the Ticketmaster service and of the Broadway shows "Victor Victoria" and "Sunset Boulevard."
