MasterCard's September volume up 24%.

NEW YORK - In the latest sign of growth in credit card usage, MasterCard International Inc. reported a 24% increase in net settlement dollar volume during September over the same period last year.

This marks the highest monthly rate of growth since January 1988 and the third consecutive month in which a record was set.

September's volume was $9.3 billion, bringing year-to-date volume to nearly $78 billion. The 22% growth rate so far this year was more than double the rate for the same period of 1992.
