Mercantile's Babb gets merger tasks.

Ralph W. Babb Jr., vice chairman of Mercantile Bancorp., St. Louis, has been given responsibility for its acquisition activities, including the management of new acquisitions outside Missouri.

The assignment is part of a management realignment related to the acquisition of United Postal Bancorp, St. Louis.

Mr. Babb, who has been at Mercantile since 1978, will continue to manage its investor relations activities and will also have responsibility for government relations.

W. Randolph Adams, president and chief executive officer of Mercantile Trust Co., will assume the additional post of chief financial officer of the holding company. He will be responsible for financial and investment management services in the realignment.

Mr. Adams' responsibilities for managing retail banking for Mercantile Bank, St. Louis, will be transferred to Michael J. Gorman, currently president and CEO of United Postal.

The new assignments will take effect upon the completion of the United Postal merger, which is expected to take place in the first quarter.
