Nepalese Bank Launches Online-Payment Service

Laxmi Bank Ltd. in Nepal has launched an online-payment service, an official from the Kathmandu-based bank tells PaymentsSource.

The service, called eSewa Savings, ties a regular savings account with a portal that enables accountholders to transact online, according to the official. Accountholders may use the portal to pay various bills, top up mobile-phone accounts, and transfer funds to any account for free.

To promote the use of the account and online transactions in general, the bank is offering a special 7.5% annual interest rate on daily balances in the savings account. The normal rate is 5%, the official says.

Earlier this year, Laxmi Bank launched a mobile-payment service for its customers. The service, called Mobile Money, enables accountholders to transfer funds to up to 10 other Laxmi customers and pay phone bills (see story).
