PNC Bank Corp., Pittsburgh, promoted Joan L. Gulley to senior vice president and head of strategic planning.

She succeeded Thomas K. Whitford, who recently became the manager of PNC's private bank.

Ms. Gulley has been chairman and chief executive officer of PNC Bank New England since 1994. She joined PNC in 1993, when it acquired Massachusetts Co., of which she was executive vice president. Earlier she worked with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.

A PNC spokesman said Ms. Gulley will continue to work with the senior management team for PNC Bank New England until a successor is named.
