Puerto Rico's Popular Inc. has hired Citigroup Inc. to pursue a buyer for its Banco Popular North America unit, with an expected price of about $1 billion, Crain's ChicagoBusiness reported Monday on its Web site, citing a person familiar with the matter. Potential buyers include J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., Wells Fargo & Co. and U.S. Bancorp. All three declined comment.
The top five banks and thrifts have combined total assets of nearly $13 trillion.
