Rochester thrift buys a Newark branch.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Rochester Community Savings Bank acquired about $104 million in deposits by purchasing a Newark, N.J., branch of Columbia Banking Federal Savings Association.

The purchase, which was made through the Resolution Trust Corp. last week, makes Rochester the leader in deposit share in Newark, the bank reported.

Rochester Community operates 28 retail banking offices in western New York, and through its subsidiary, Shadow Lawn Savings Bank, 17 retail banking offices in central New Jersey.

The bank reported it plans to sell Shadow Lawn for $74.6 million this summer to Sovereign Bancorp of Wyomissing, Pa.
