Short Takes: Bank Picks Counsel For Asset Management

U.S. Bancorp announced this week that it has named a chief lawyer for its asset management and investment advisory businesses. Christopher J. Smith, 36, joined the Minneapolis banking company Aug. 15 from Investment Advisers Inc., an asset management firm in Minneapolis.

In the newly created post of executive vice president and general counsel for institutional financial services, Mr. Smith oversees all legal matters relating to U.S. Bancorp's $77.5 billion of assets under management. He reports to Lee Mitau, U.S. Bancorp's general counsel.

At Investment Advisers, Mr. Smith was a senior vice president and general counsel. Before joining the company in 1991 he spent four years with Dorsey & Whitney, a Minneapolis law firm.
