PaineWebber Inc. hired the former treasurer of the state of Maine to pitch its Mitchell Hutchins mutual funds to public institutional investors, including state and municipal pensions.

Samuel D. Shapiro, who had been the treasurer of Maine for 16 years, joined Mitchell Hutchins Asset Management Inc., a subsidiary that manages $43 billion of assets, as senior vice president of public funds last week.
