Smart Bits: Canada Trust to Join Pilot for Smart Card

Canada Trust is joining the pilot program for the Exact smart card, announced in June by Toronto Dominion Bank and Bank of Montreal.

The yearlong test is to begin this fall in Kingston, Ontario. The system will use the Proton technology developed by Banksys of Belgium. The addition of Canada Trust will expand the program, originally estimated to reach 20,000 consumers with access to 800 terminals.

Mondex, the competing stored-value technology, also will be tested this fall, in Guelph, Ontario. The issuers are Royal Bank of Canada and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.
