Smart Bits: Motorola Licenses SCM Card Technology

SCM Microsystems Inc. said it has licensed smart card technology to Motorola Inc., a move that could accelerate the linkage between smart cards and set-top boxes for interactive multimedia services.

With the integration of SCM's CI Pack+ and SmartOS systems, users of Motorola's Streamaster architecture can rely on standard PC cards or smart cards for secure electronic commerce or other services.

Streamaster, a product of the leading maker of embedded semiconductor chips, is designed for interactive entertainment, video games, and other Internet and multimedia offerings.

Working with SCM, "Streamaster products will ship with the ability to access content from a variety of providers and will be ready for consumer smart card applications such as home banking and shopping," said SCM president and chief executive officer Steve Humphreys.
