Smart Bits: Schlumberger to Make Cards in Mexico City

Schlumberger of France said it will open a smart-card- manufacturing facility in Mexico City April 17, to serve the burgeoning Latin American market.

Schlumberger will open the $40-million facility in conjunction with Printer, Mexico's leading magnetic stripe card manufacturer. It acquired an 80% stake in the company last July.

Schlumberger also said it had received an order for 25,000 smart-card- equipped public telephones from Telmex, the national phone company. Telmex's annual smart-card requirements may reach 200 million pieces per year.
