Gemplus, the French card manufacturer, announced it will provide smart cards, card readers, and smart card services to Unisys Corp. for its Single Point Security program.
The network of information security products and services providers will deliver access control for networked computers, Gemplus said.
The program will prohibit unauthorized users from accessing desktop computers and the servers to which they are connected. Gemplus smart cards and card readers can be used to control desktop access, alleviating concern over password misuse.
"The smart card is the ultimate tool for achieving easy, secure access control, improving the level of security through high-level authentication protocols, and for maintaining accurate user profiles," said Regine Wojciechowski, Gemplus business development director for North America.
Gemplus also will offer Unisys card personalization through its worldwide facilities, a service that is key for access control systems. The smart card's user information can be personalized to each card and, when used in conjunction with the Single Point Security software, will allow the user to be identified, authenticated, and granted authorized access.
